Recordati licences silodosin from Kissei for the whole of Europe
Milan, 13 December, 2004
Recordati announced that it has entered into a license agreement
with Kissei Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., a Japanese pharmaceutical
company, for the development and marketing of silodosin, a new
compound discovered by Kissei for the treatment of symptoms
associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia, in all European
countries.
Silodosin is a selective alpha-1A receptor antagonist which
relaxes smooth muscles at the prostate and the urethra. Urinary
resistance is consequently decreased and thus symptoms associated
with benign prostatic hyperplasia are alleviated. This condition is
frequently observed in ageing men and its symptoms significantly
reduce quality of life. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is increasing
in frequency due to the progressive ageing of the population.
The drug has already completed its development in Japan where a
new drug application has been filed. Under this agreement Recordati
obtains exclusive rights to silodosin for Europe (45 countries)
where it will complete its clinical development and following
approval will market and sell it.
"This agreement further confirms our strategy to enrich our
product pipeline through partnerships and to expand our
pharmaceutical operations into other European countries" declared
Giovanni Recordati, Chairman and CEO. "The silodosin agreement
reflects our commitment to the research and development of
treatments for urological disorders and complements our own
original programs involving candidates for the treatment of other
micturition disorders. We are looking forward to our collaboration
with Kissei and through Kissei with Watson Pharmaceuticals, who
will be developing the product for the North American market, to
take advantage of opportunities for co-operation and synergies
between the European and U.S. development programs."
Recordati, established in 1926, is a European pharmaceutical
group, listed on the Italian Stock Exchange (Reuters RECI.MI,
Bloomberg REC IM, ISIN IT 0003074447), dedicated to the research,
development, manufacturing and marketing of pharmaceuticals and
pharmaceutical chemicals, with headquarters in Milan, Italy and
operating subsidiaries in France, Ireland, Spain, Switzerland and
the United States.
