Recordati: lercanidipine collaboration in Japan between Tsumura and Dainippon
Milan, 21 December 2001
Recordati announced today that a preliminary collaboration
agreement between the Japanese pharmaceutical companies Tsumura
& Co., the Japanese licensee for lercanidipine, a calcium
channel blocker, discovered and developed by Recordati, for the
treatment of hypertension, and Dainippon Pharmaceutical Co. was
signed. Under this agreement both companies are committed, within
June 2002, to enter into a co-development and co-marketing contract
to create the best conditions for the registration and success of
lercanidipine in Japan.

worldwide. In Japan around 20 million people suffer from
hypertension of which only 7.5 million are currently treated. The
calcium channel blocker market, to which lercanidipine belongs, is
worth over $ 2 billion. The two Japanese pharmaceutical companies
expect to launch lercanidipine in 2005.

Tsumura and Dainippon Pharmaceutical", declared Giovanni Recordati,
Chairman and CEO. "Thanks to this collaboration the resources
dedicated to a fast and effective performance of lercanidipine on
the Japanese market will be strengthened".
